Both Top Drop editions, in Calgary and Vancouver, have been created by local wine trade with backgrounds in restaurant, retail, importing and sales. We took what we love about wine events and built on that, while stepping away from some common tropes we feel have run their course over the years. Each year's editions begin with a call for applications from around the world, from terroir-driven wineries making authentic wines of time and place.
After applications are received, our selection committee, composed of our region's most-lauded sommeliers and retailers, comb through them, with voting directed around wineries that interested and excite them most, and extra consideration given to those producers who rarely visit our markets. A winery-based principal (winemaker, proprietor, director, etc.) being in attendance for all Top Drop events is mandatory. Once selections are made, we build our seminar and event programming alongside our trade colleagues.
